The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday warned that heavy rains from Tropical Depression Basyang could trigger lahar flows around Kanlaon Volcano in Negros.

Phivolcs said saturated slopes may allow volcanic debris to be swept downhill, posing risks to communities near river channels and low-lying areas.

Local government units in parts of Negros Occidental, including Bago City, La Carlota City, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, and San Carlos City, were advised to remain on alert.

Areas in Negros Oriental, including Canlaon City, were also identified as vulnerable to rain-induced volcanic hazards.

The state volcanology bureau said persistent rainfall could cause sediment-laden streamflows, flooding, and siltation in affected areas.

Phivolcs explained that loose deposits from Kanlaon’s past eruptions and recent ash emissions remain unstable and can be remobilized by intense or prolonged rain.

Residents in identified danger zones were urged to monitor advisories and prepare for possible evacuation if conditions worsen.

Kanlaon Volcano has been under Alert Level 2 since July 29, 2025, indicating moderate unrest.
