Weather disruptions from Tropical Storm Basyang led several local governments in Eastern Visayas to halt classes and government operations on Friday as rainfall persisted across the region.

Provincial authorities in Southern Leyte ordered a province-wide suspension of classes in public and private schools, alongside a temporary halt to work in government offices.

The directive, issued by Gov. Damian Mercado, cited continuing rains and the need to reduce risks to residents as weather conditions remained unstable.

Mercado said decisions on whether to suspend operations in private businesses were left to company management.

Other local governments in Eastern Samar, Leyte, and Biliran implemented similar measures as they monitored the effects of Basyang in their respective areas.

In Tacloban City, Mayor Alfred Romualdez likewise kept schools closed for the day, covering all levels in both public and private institutions.

City authorities were also instructed to intensify clearing operations in drainage systems, particularly in flood-prone communities, to mitigate possible flooding.

At the same time, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported that port operations in parts of Eastern Visayas remained restricted, leaving passengers and cargo stranded as sea travel was suspended due to unsafe conditions.
