The Provincial Government of La Union has inaugurated a new birthing health station in Barangay Sta. Monica to improve access to safe and quality maternal and newborn healthcare services.
Governor Mario Eduardo Ortega and Bauang Mayor Ma. Clarissa “Manang Bong” Lee led the inauguration of the facility on October 27, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen community healthcare services, particularly for pregnant women and newborns.
The project was developed in response to the need for a safe and properly equipped childbirth facility identified by the Barangay Council of Sta. Monica and supported by the Municipal Health Office.
The new health station is designed to provide a more accessible location for childbirth and maternal healthcare, reducing the need for expectant mothers to travel farther to seek essential medical services.
The facility includes an admission area, waiting area, examination room, midwife station, treatment and consultation room, birthing room, labor room, and patient ward.
It is also equipped with a sterilization and cleanup area, medicine storage room, utility room, pantry, and public toilet to support healthcare operations.
Additional infrastructure includes a perimeter fence, slope protection, and a water pumping system to ensure a reliable water supply.
The facility is also fully solar-powered, providing an alternative energy source to support its operations.
The provincial government said the project is intended to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare delivery while addressing gaps in access to appropriate birthing facilities in the community.
Also present during the inauguration were Bauang Municipal Administrator Ronald Lee, Provincial Engineer Frederick Atijera, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Herminigildo Velasco, Barangay Sta. Monica Captain Marvin Caccam, and other local officials and residents.
The opening of the health station forms part of the provincial government’s efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure and bring essential medical services closer to communities across La Union.
