WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump asked Chinese President Xi Jinping whether Beijing would be interested in purchasing American weapons, according to US Ambassador to China David Perdue.
Perdue disclosed the exchange during an interview with Fox News following Xi’s state visit to Washington, but did not say when Trump raised the issue or how the Chinese leader responded. Fox News
The US State Department later clarified that American law prohibits arms sales to China and that Washington has “no offer or plan” to sell weapons to Beijing. South China Morning Post
Perdue made the remarks while discussing Washington’s continued arms sales to Taiwan and said US policy toward the island remains unchanged.
Beijing, meanwhile, reiterated that China develops its military based on its own defense needs and remains committed to safeguarding peace and stability.
The disclosure came after Trump and Xi held meetings in Washington during the Chinese leader’s three-day state visit to the United States.
