TOKYO – Central Tokyo recorded rain for a 34th consecutive day on Tuesday, marking the longest such streak since records began, according to Japan’s weather agency.
Rain has been recorded in the capital every day since Aug. 27, with approaching typhoons, a stationary autumn rain front and a low-pressure trough contributing to the prolonged wet spell.
The previous record was 33 consecutive days of rain from June 27 to July 29, 2019.
The heaviest rainfall during the current streak was recorded on Sept. 21, when central Tokyo received 156 millimeters of rain.
Total rainfall reached 629 millimeters through Monday, about three times Tokyo’s average precipitation for the entire month of September.
Rain also affected large parts of eastern and western Japan on Tuesday, with Echizen in Fukui Prefecture recording more than 30 millimeters of rainfall within an hour early in the day.
The wet conditions are expected to persist, with rain forecast mainly across eastern Japan until around Thursday due in part to the lingering autumn rain front.
