Timberland Mountain Bike Park, situated atop Mt. Maarat in San Mateo, Rizal, is celebrating its first year of operations by enhancing the mountain biking experience for riders of all skill levels. Since its opening, Trail Solutions has worked diligently to improve the park’s trails, ensuring they meet international standards for safety and enjoyment.
The park originally featured 12 kilometers of trails, but with the addition of the new Parabellum trail, the total length has expanded to 16 kilometers. Riders can now create challenging loops of up to 20 kilometers by mixing and matching trails connected by hub rest areas.
One of the biggest challenges faced by Trail Solutions was transitioning Filipino riders to a “pay-to-play” model, as access to the trails was previously free. The introduction of an entrance fee, which includes mandatory insurance, allows for better maintenance and safety features throughout the park.
Safety measures include a single entrance and exit point where guards monitor rider counts, ensuring no one is left behind. Visitors begin their day at the Timberland Highlands Resort, where they pay the entrance fee and complete necessary waivers. For those without their own bikes, the park offers rentals, including full-suspension mountain bikes and e-bikes, which are ideal for navigating the park’s rugged terrain.
The park’s entrance fee contributes to various amenities, such as clear signage, comfortable rest areas, and man-made features like bridges and wall rides. Trail Solutions is committed to maintaining and expanding the park, with plans for a mountain bike school featuring PMBIA-certified instructors to help riders improve their skills.
Additionally, the park is developing more beginner-friendly trails near the entrance, expanding the Skills Zone for those looking to practice without the pressure of steep climbs. To encourage repeat visits, riders can exchange used wristbands for Stokens, which can be redeemed for merchandise or additional rides.
Reflecting on the past year, Agu Paiso of Trail Solutions noted, “We have to be two steps ahead of our riders’ skill and fitness curve.” He has observed significant improvements among returning bikers, with many progressing from tentative riders to confident downhill racers.
With ongoing enhancements and a focus on rider development, Timberland Mountain Bike Park promises to deliver even more flow and excitement for mountain bikers in the years to come. The park operates from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with day passes priced at P250 on weekdays and P500 on weekends.
