Subic Bay Freeport – The winds of international investment are blowing toward Subic Bay, as Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Miguel Utray Delgado, visited the Freeport on May 22, 2025, exploring opportunities to bring more Spanish businesses into this thriving economic zone.
Welcomed by Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño, Ambassador Delgado was joined by a high-level delegation that included Trade and Economic Counsellor Silvia Torices de la Varga, Market Analyst Jose Primo Santos Mendoza, Economic and Commercial Attaché Pedro González Lendínez, and Metalyset CEO Jose Moreno Sanchez Perez.
“Subic Bay is fast becoming a beacon of economic potential,” Ambassador Delgado said. “If this momentum continues, it has the makings of a premier logistics and trade hub in Southeast Asia.”

His confidence is backed by data: Subic Bay Freeport was recently highlighted as one of the world’s top economic zones in a White Paper study by Spanish consulting firm IDOM, in collaboration with the World Free and Special Economic Zones Federation (FEMOZA).
Delgado emphasized that Spain’s growing interest in Subic is no coincidence. “Our visit couldn’t be more timely. Spanish firms across diverse sectors are setting their sights on this Freeport — and we’ve brought one of the best with us: Metalyset.”
Founded in 2008, Metalyset is a global technical and industrial services company from Spain with deep roots in the metalworking industry. Since expanding internationally in 2015, the company has steadily grown its global footprint — and Subic may be next on the map.
SBMA Chairman Aliño welcomed the initiative, highlighting the enduring connection between Spain and the Philippines. “The Spanish legacy is literally built into Subic — from historic landmarks like the Spanish Gate to today’s growing bilateral partnerships,” he said.
Also attending the visit was Best Chang, Assistant to the CEO of Xantheng Subic International Corporation, who showcased the expanding Taiwanese footprint in Subic, including flagship developments like the Tipo High-Tech Eco Park (THEP) and the Subic Bay Gateway Park (SBGP).
With eyes now on the horizon, Subic Bay Freeport stands ready — not just as a historical landmark, but as a modern gateway for global business.
