Sorsogon has intensified its response to dengue after infections more than doubled from last year and reached the epidemic threshold, prompting authorities to mobilize local governments, hospitals and communities across the province.
The Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit reported 1,426 cases since Jan. 1, representing a 107-percent increase from the previous year. Of the total, 123 infections were detected from Aug. 16 to 22.
Gov. Edwin Hamor responded by issuing Executive Order No. 129-2026, requiring municipalities to strengthen surveillance and prevention measures and make resources available to contain further transmission.
Local governments were directed to reinforce the Department of Health’s “4S Kontra Dengue” campaign. A major focus is eliminating stagnant water from containers, discarded tires, gutters and other places where dengue-carrying mosquitoes can breed.
Barangays were tasked with organizing cleanup operations and mobilizing health workers and volunteers. Residents were also encouraged to practice the “4 O’Clock Habit” by inspecting their surroundings for potential breeding grounds each afternoon and to protect themselves with repellents, mosquito nets and appropriate clothing.
Health facilities are preparing for patients as well. Public and private hospitals were instructed to maintain dedicated dengue fast lanes so suspected cases can be assessed, treated or referred without unnecessary delay.
The dengue surge is not limited to Sorsogon. Naga City in neighboring Camarines Sur has declared a state of calamity after registering more than 200 infections and six deaths. The City Council approved the declaration Tuesday following a recommendation from the local disaster risk reduction and management council.
Naga Mayor Leni Robredo has inspected the city general hospital as officials work to secure additional beds and operate a dengue fast lane. Health authorities in both areas are emphasizing early consultation and mosquito-control measures as they attempt to prevent further infections.
