Shirly Cruz’s daughter chooses the spotlight after graduating summa cum laude

In an industry where celebrity children are often expected to follow a familiar script, Ashley Nicole Bustos is charting her own narrative — one that bridges academic excellence and artistic inheritance.

Fresh off graduating summa cum laude from San Francisco State University with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Race and Resistance Studies, the 24-year-old daughter of Sheryl Cruz has made a surprising yet somehow inevitable choice: she wants to pursue a career in entertainment.

For Cruz, the decision is less about surprise and more about self-determination.

“You can’t force young people these days,” the actress shared during a recent story conference for her upcoming film project. “It’s part of her DNA.”

That DNA carries weight in Philippine showbiz. Cruz belongs to the prominent Cruz clan — a lineage that includes Tirso Cruz III, Donna Cruz, Sunshine Cruz, Rodjun Cruz, and Rayver Cruz. On her maternal side, Ashley’s grandmother is actress Rosemarie Sonora, sister of the late screen legend Susan Roces.

With that heritage, Cruz acknowledges that performance runs deep in her daughter’s veins.

“I cannot take that away from her,” she said.

Yet Ashley’s entry into entertainment does not follow the traditional mold of a starlet stepping directly into the limelight. What distinguishes her is the intellectual foundation she brings to the craft. A background in psychology equips her with tools to dissect character motivations, emotional arcs, and human behavior — assets that can enrich any performance.

Meanwhile, her minor in Race and Resistance Studies offers cultural literacy and sociopolitical awareness, qualities increasingly vital in global storytelling.

Cruz is keenly aware of this dual strength. Beyond acting and singing, she revealed that Ashley is also a gifted screenplay writer — a creative lane that merges her academic training with artistic instinct.

“If she wants to collaborate with productions here in the Philippines or abroad, whether for television or film, she can do that,” Cruz noted. “Her studies are already embedded in her writing.”

Industry insiders have also begun to take notice. Veteran talent manager Rams David has reportedly taken Ashley under his wing, guiding her early career decisions. Still, Cruz insists she will not micromanage.

“I want her to experience everything,” she said. “Not only with the help of a manager but with the support of family. She can always ask me for advice, and I’ll be there.”

The support system extends beyond Cruz. Despite their separation, Cruz and her former husband, Norman Bustos, maintain an amicable co-parenting relationship centered on their only child. The two were seen together at Ashley’s graduation ceremony in California — a quiet testament to shared pride over personal history.

“We’re civil for our daughter,” Cruz said, adding that both parents are fully supportive of Ashley’s ambitions.

As for her own life, Cruz appears equally grounded. She describes herself as happily single, open to dating but firmly focused on work. Admirers may come and go, but her priority remains steady.

If Ashley Nicole Bustos succeeds in show business, it will not merely be because she carries a famous surname. It will be because she stands at the intersection of legacy and latitude — honoring the artistic bloodline she comes from while forging a path defined by scholarship, global perspective, and creative agency.

In an era where young talents are rewriting the rules of fame, Ashley’s journey signals a compelling evolution: brains and bloodline, heritage and hard-earned merit, converging under the bright lights of a new generation.
