Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Tuesday signaled caution in ordering immediate energy conservation measures despite risks to fuel supply linked to the Middle East crisis.
Speaking before the House of Councillors Budget Committee, Takaichi said she was not inclined to issue a broad appeal that could slow economic activity at this stage.
She said any decision would depend on how the situation develops, noting that the government is closely tracking energy supply conditions and market movements.
The Prime Minister also indicated that Japan is preparing to step up diplomatic engagement to help ease tensions in the region.
She said efforts are underway to arrange separate phone calls with Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian as part of outreach to both sides.
According to Takaichi, maintaining communication with Washington and Tehran is essential in preventing further escalation.
Her remarks came after talks between Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi earlier this week.
She said Japan is looking to take a more direct role in the next phase of diplomatic efforts as tensions persist.
