The Philippine National Police said Sunday it was reviewing new statements and developments related to the drowning of Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
PNP Public Information Office officer in charge Police Col. Allen Rae Co said all public statements, accounts, and information submitted to investigators would be considered in the ongoing probe.
Co said the PNP was taking note of the latest claims while stressing that investigators would assess them as part of the fact-finding process.
The statement came after a woman who identified herself as Efi, the estranged wife of Ateneo Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin, appeared in a video with her daughter and claimed they had previously warned Ateneo that children were unsafe around him.
The woman, through a video posted by Auckland-based barrister Tudor Clee, also appealed to the parents of Baterbonia and Adili and claimed the tragedy could have been avoided.
Co said it would be premature for authorities to draw conclusions at this stage because doing so could affect the integrity of the investigation and the rights of those involved.
Baterbonia, an incoming rookie, and Adili, a sophomore Nigerian student-athlete, drowned during a routine training run at the Blue Eagles’ camp in Dipaculao, Aurora.
The PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group is conducting a separate inquiry and is ready to support other agencies reviewing the case. The Philippine Sports Commission, UAAP, Commission on Higher Education, National Youth Commission, National Bureau of Investigation, CIDG, and the Senate are also looking into possible administrative or criminal negligence in the incident.
