The Philippines is preparing to take on a larger role in regional tourism as it readies to host key Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) events in 2026, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said.
The DOT said the country will host the United Nations Tourism Global Forum on Gastronomy and the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026 in Cebu, scheduled from Jan. 26 to 29, alongside the meeting of ASEAN tourism ministers.
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said the hosting affirms the Philippines’ leadership and resilience in shaping the future of tourism in the region.
One of the major outcome documents expected from the forum is the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Action Plan, for which the Philippines serves as country coordinator.
The DOT said the tourism sector faced headwinds in 2025 due to visa disruptions, natural calamities affecting destinations, security perceptions, and limited air connectivity.
Despite these challenges, Frasco said tourism continued to restore livelihoods and support communities across the country.
The DOT said it strengthened tourism infrastructure and services nationwide, including tourist rest areas, digital platforms, transit tours, and a medical concierge at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Frasco said tourism’s progress was driven by workers, partners, and communities that continued to welcome visitors with resilience and the Filipino spirit amid uncertainty.
