With the 50th Season Philippine Cup Finals just days away, the Philippine Basketball Association is taking extra steps to keep the spotlight where it belongs—on the games themselves.

League commissioner Willie Marcial confirmed that the commissioner’s office will sit down with head coaches and referees ahead of Game 1, aiming to set a clear tone for officiating when the title series tips off Wednesday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

Marcial said the meeting, scheduled on the eve of the opener at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City, will bring together San Miguel Beer coach Leo Austria and TNT Tropang 5G mentor Chot Reyes, along with the league’s game officials.

The initiative was approved during the PBA’s most recent board meeting and is meant to promote open communication, clarify officiating standards, and ensure everyone enters the Finals on the same page.

“Para makita kung ano ang appreciation sa tawagan, paano ang tawag,” Marcial explained during the Finals press conference at Novotel Quezon City. “Magkaroon ng konting liwanag para sa mga coaches at pati sa mga referees.”

Beyond the immediate Finals, Marcial said the league plans to make these coaches-referees meetings a regular fixture in every conference, signaling a long-term push for transparency and consistency.

The commissioner also emphasized that only the league’s top officials will handle the biggest games of the season. From an initial pool of 24 referees at the start of the conference, the PBA has trimmed the list down to just 12 for the Finals.

“Sana maayos ang tawagan. Hindi naman mawawala ang issues, pero gagawin namin lahat,” Marcial said.

He capped it off with a reminder that referees are held to the same high standards as players. “Parang mga players din ‘yan. Minsan sinasabi nila depende sa gising. Pero sa referees, kailangan talaga sila laging handa. May suspension, may tanggalan—kaya dapat preparado palagi.”

As the Finals stage is set, the message from the league office is clear: expect the best teams, the biggest moments—and officials ready for every call.
