A low-pressure area embedded in the Intertropical Convergence Zone is expected to bring rains over Southern Luzon, the Visayas and large parts of Mindanao on Thursday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina said the LPA was located about 125 kilometers east of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
Cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected over the Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Davao del Norte, Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, Batangas, Quezon, Mimaropa and the Bicol Region due to the combined effects of the ITCZ and the LPA.
PAGASA warned that moderate to at times heavy rains may trigger flash floods or landslides in affected areas.
The rest of Mindanao may experience isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the ITCZ.
Northern and Central Luzon, meanwhile, are expected to have generally fair weather, although isolated rain showers and thunderstorms may develop in the afternoon or early evening.
Light to moderate winds and slight to moderate seas are forecast across the country.
Badrina said the LPA’s westward movement could help reestablish the southwest monsoon in the coming days through the weekend, affecting Palawan, the Visayas and Mindanao.
PAGASA is also monitoring Tropical Storm Dujuan outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
As of 3 a.m., Dujuan was located about 2,970 kilometers east of Northern Luzon, carrying maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 90 kph. It was moving north-northwest at 20 kph.
Badrina said the tropical storm currently has no direct effect on the Philippines and has only a slim chance of entering the PAR. (PNA)
