The Jollibee Group has taken a decisive leap toward a cleaner energy future, switching its Philippine commissaries to 99% renewable electricity through a landmark partnership with First Gen. The move significantly strengthens the company’s renewable energy portfolio while reinforcing operational resilience across its manufacturing and logistics network.

Powered primarily by geothermal energy supplied by First Gen, the transition delivers 11 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity to Jollibee Group facilities. The shift is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70% across covered sites—an impact aligned with the company’s Joy for Tomorrow sustainability agenda and its broader decarbonization strategy.

The milestone was formally marked on January 29 during a ceremonial switch-on at the Jollibee Group’s Laguna commissary, attended by company executives and local stakeholders. The event signaled the official start of renewable electricity operations at one of the group’s key production hubs.

This development builds on earlier renewable investments. In 2023, the Jollibee Group engaged First Gen to install 17,000 solar panels with over 9 MW of capacity across commissaries and distribution sites in Parañaque and Laguna. Completed in 2024, the project also introduced a Remote Energy Monitoring System to enhance power optimization and efficiency at its logistics hub.

Michael Ong, President for Manufacturing and Logistics of the Jollibee Group, underscored the strategic importance of the transition.

“Switching our commissaries to 99% renewable electricity enables us to build a sustainable and reliable energy foundation for our growing operations. This transition reduces our environmental footprint whilst ensuring energy stability—benefits that are meaningful not only today but well into the future.”

The renewable shift not only advances environmental goals but also strengthens the backbone of the company’s expanding global operations. As the group continues to scale internationally, stable and clean energy becomes a critical pillar supporting long-term growth.

Joseph Tanbuntiong, Jollibee Group Philippines CEO and Global Head of the Jollibee Brand, emphasized that sustainability decisions are directly tied to the company’s purpose.

“At the Jollibee Group, our purpose is to spread joy through superior taste. And for me, that purpose has always gone beyond what’s on the plate. Behind every meal we serve is a long chain of work that begins in our commissaries. How we power these facilities matters. By shifting to renewable energy, we are ensuring our operations remain reliable and consistent as we grow.”

For First Gen, the partnership represents a shared commitment to clean and dependable energy systems. Carlo Vega, Chief Customer Engagement Officer of First Gen, highlighted the disciplined approach behind the shift.

“The shift to geothermal and solar electricity reflects the Jollibee Group’s disciplined approach to growth—investing in reliable energy systems that strengthen operations today and support expansion across its Philippine and global footprint. We are proud to support the Jollibee Group as it progresses in its sustainability journey. We look forward to our continued partnership as the group moves from sustainability and decarbonization to a regenerative future.”

In the Philippine energy landscape, geothermal power stands out as the only renewable source with baseload capability—providing consistent, round-the-clock supply suited for industrial-scale operations. By combining geothermal and solar solutions, the Jollibee Group has built a diversified renewable energy mix that balances reliability with sustainability.

The initiative aligns with relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those centered on affordable clean energy and climate action. More importantly, it demonstrates how corporate growth and environmental responsibility can move forward together—ensuring that as Jollibee expands its footprint, it does so on a cleaner, more resilient energy foundation.
