They say that college is the perfect time to find yourself, meet incredible people, build dreams, and explore the world. Many students long for a simple college life—attending classes, studying, and enjoying moments with friends. But for me, the desire was more profound. I wanted to live honestly, to create something meaningful, and to be part of a larger story. My name is Ruz, and this is my journey of self-discovery, purpose, and embracing every moment of my college experience.
I stepped into this new chapter right after graduating from senior high school in 2022, embarking on my first year at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). Like so many others, I found myself navigating the challenging waters of financial instability, which forced me to balance both work and study. There was no other choice.
This struggle shaped me, igniting a fire that drives everything I do today. It pushed me to dive into various mass organizations, such as The Catalyst—our campus publication, where I contribute as a news staff member—and CampusPop, known for its progressive voice. My commitment to this path expanded further as I immersed myself in volunteer work with other media outlets.
Experiencing the grind and feeling the weight of worker exploitation in our country shifted my perspective. I no longer just saw the struggles around me; I felt them deeply—each injustice fueled my desire for change. The daily battles I faced connected me to the mass movement, making me crave action and a voice.
A significant part of my journey has also revolved around discovering my true self. As an openly gay individual who identifies as non-binary, my gender expression is an androgynous blend, allowing me to embrace both masculine and feminine styles. To me, gender is an expression of who we truly are, and I’ve always been vocal about my identity since elementary school.
My experience as an LGBTQIA+ student within the organizations I’ve joined has been affirming and uplifting. There, I found a community free of judgment—a space where being politically aware meant accepting the LGBTQIA+ community as simply a part of humanity. It felt liberating to propose ideas without being defined by my identity; rather, my thoughts were valued for their merit. I’ve never felt the need to hide or shrink myself to fit in. Instead, I’ve been able to express my true essence, finding joy and fulfillment in authenticity.
When I first joined these groups, I hoped to find friendship, build confidence, and discover my purpose. Reflecting on my journey, I see that those hopes were not in vain—especially in The Catalyst. Here, friendships transcend shared interests; they foster solidarity during tough times as friends face challenges together and find solutions as a team. Confidence blossomed from their unwavering support—a deep trust that brightens my day.
My involvement with The Catalyst has led to a profound political awakening. Without this organization, I might have remained blind to the root causes of our country’s struggles—the economic, political, and cultural crises that shape our reality. I learned to see the political landscape even within my own family, and through the “militant way of writing” that The Catalyst champions, I began to confront the harsh truths of our society.
However, this life of activism is not without its burdens. One of the most brutal truths no one talks about is the constant need to compromise. I often face the dilemma of choosing between attending class or speaking out at a movement. It’s not simply about chasing good grades; it’s about aligning with a deeper purpose.
Admittedly, there are moments of burnout when I feel overwhelmed by the weight of my responsibilities. Yet, I find strength in my ability to navigate pressure—deciding which topics to write about gives me a profound sense of responsibility. And even when I need to step back for other commitments, I always feel the pull to return.
What I cherish about the organizations I’m involved with is their understanding of the delicate balance between school, work, and our commitments. Here, I feel valued and included. My contributions offer me a sense of purpose, empowering me even as a student. I wholeheartedly believe that change is possible, especially when we stand together with the masses. In this cradle of change, amid the constant demands, I’ve discovered a profound meaning—a tapestry woven from my experiences, aspirations, and the beautiful connections I’ve made along the way.
