Several areas in western Philippines are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon continues to affect the country, the state weather bureau said.

In its early morning advisory, Pagasa said Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique were likely to receive between 50 to 100 millimeters of rain on Sunday.

The weather agency warned that rainfall could intensify in mountainous and elevated areas, with risks heightened by previous days of continuous rain.

Pagasa earlier declared the start of the habagat season, signaling the onset of frequent rains in the western sections of the country.

The agency said the southwest monsoon, characterized by warm and moisture laden winds, continues to draw rain clouds over these areas.

Similar weather conditions are expected to persist in the coming days, with more provinces in Western Visayas and Luzon likely to be affected.

By Monday, the same volume of rainfall is forecast to hit parts of Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Antique, Iloilo, and Guimaras, before expanding to include Zambales, Bataan, and Batangas on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, localized thunderstorms brought moderate to heavy rains with lightning and strong winds in parts of Cavite and Batangas, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain alert for possible flooding and landslides.
