The municipal government of Currimao in Ilocos Norte moved to extend life and agricultural insurance coverage to all 1,800 farmers and fisherfolk in the town as part of efforts to protect livelihoods vulnerable to disasters and income losses.

Municipal agriculturist Erickson Biag said the program, implemented with the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, was intended to provide financial protection against accidents, death, crop damage, natural hazards and other livelihood-related risks.

The local government allocated Php 200,000 for the initiative, matching the amount set aside for the same purpose last year.

Officials said the program was aimed at strengthening the safety net for farming and fishing households that regularly face disruptions from typhoons, droughts, floods, pests and other hazards.

Eligible beneficiaries were set to receive assistance in securing both life and agricultural insurance coverage, giving them added protection while continuing their farming and fishing activities.

Registration remained ongoing at the Municipal Agriculture Office, where applicants were advised to submit the necessary requirements for enrollment.

The municipal government said broader insurance coverage could help affected households recover more quickly when emergencies or production losses disrupted their sources of income.

Farmer Rainy Valente of Barangay Comcomloong welcomed the initiative, saying the coverage provided additional protection and peace of mind for local farmers and fisherfolk.
