Former Iriga City mayor Madelaine ‘Madel’ Alfelor has surrendered to the authorities after learning that a warrant for her arrest had been issued by the Sandiganbayan over a malversation case filed against her.
The anti-graft court issued the arrest order in connection with the malversation complaint involving ₱30 million in public funds that was filed against her by the Office of the Ombudsman (OMB).
On record, the malversation case stemmed from a complaint that Alfelor falsified public documents and violated Republic Act 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
Alfelor and her co-defendants were accused of defrauding the city government by allegedly mishandling the funds intended for beneficiaries of the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations or AICS program.
An investigation conducted showed that the list of the AICS beneficiaries that were submitted included dead people and fake names.
No bail was recommended for Alfelor’s temporary liberty.
Aside from the mayor, the Sandiganbayan also ordered the arrest of former city officials Ruben delos Santos and Jean Bongon.
Alfelor has been committed to the Quezon City Jail female dormitory at Camp Karingal while Delos Santos has been detained at the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas.
Bongon has yet to be arrested.
