The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has warned that syndicates may target Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in schemes to transport illegal drugs.

Authorities said the tactics include recruiting individuals for work abroad, such as domestic helpers, or offering fully sponsored trips that could involve placing drugs in luggage without the knowledge of the traveler.

As the agency responsible for monitoring ports and airports, the BOC has increased border control measures to help prevent illegal drugs from entering the country. Officials are working with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) to provide guidance and information to OFWs on these risks.

BOC Chief Ariel Nepomuceno said the agency is coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure that OFWs are not unknowingly involved in illegal activities. The BOC is also monitoring airports and seaports to detect and stop attempts to transport illicit substances.

The BOC and DMW aim to provide information that helps overseas workers recognize and avoid potential scams related to recruitment or travel arrangements.

OFWs are encouraged to confirm the legitimacy of recruitment agencies and employers, personally handle their luggage, and avoid carrying packages for others if the contents and origin are uncertain.

Coordination between the BOC, DMW, and other agencies remains ongoing to maintain secure borders and protect travelers.

Authorities noted that awareness and vigilance are important in reducing the risk of OFWs being exploited in illegal drug transport.
