The Bureau of Customs (BOC) foiled a suspected smuggling attempt in the Celebes Sea after authorities intercepted a vessel carrying about 3,000 master cases of illegal cigarettes worth an estimated Php 180 million.
Authorities said the bulk carrier appeared to be transferring cargo at sea and was observed maneuvering irregularly, prompting a joint anti-smuggling operation with the Department of National Defense and the Philippine Navy – Western Mindanao Naval Command.
The vessel was apprehended around 52 nautical miles west of Kalamansig Port in Sultan Kudarat.
Upon inspection, officials discovered the cigarettes lacked supporting documents for lawful importation.
The foreign crew could not verify the legality of the cargo. The vessel was escorted to Naval Station Romulo Espaldon on February 25 for inventory and documentation of the seized goods.
Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said the apprehension aligns with the government’s efforts to curb illicit trade through stronger maritime monitoring.
He added that the BOC remains consistent in its efforts to combat the illegal sale, manufacture, and distribution of contraband cigarettes.
Authorities emphasized that the operation underscores the bureau’s ongoing commitment to enforcing customs laws and protecting legitimate trade.
