MANILA – San Beda Law School Dean Ranhilio Aquino raised questions over the defense team’s position on the withdrawal of three articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte, suggesting that the move could indicate an intention to prolong the Senate impeachment trial.

In a statement featured on October 17, 2026, Aquino questioned why Duterte’s defense opposed the prosecution’s decision to withdraw three impeachment articles despite the move narrowing the case against the Vice President.

The prosecution earlier withdrew Articles 1, 3, and 4, leaving Article 2, which concerns allegations of unexplained wealth, as the remaining charge in the impeachment proceedings.

The defense, however, raised concerns that the withdrawal could deprive Duterte of the opportunity to respond to allegations and evidence already presented during the trial.

Defense lawyers maintained that the Vice President should be given a meaningful opportunity to address the accusations, citing her right to due process and a fair hearing.

The Senate impeachment court subsequently ruled that the withdrawn articles would no longer be submitted for a verdict, while the defense would proceed with its presentation of evidence on the remaining charge.

Aquino’s remarks add to the discussion over whether the withdrawal of the three articles would help expedite the proceedings or raise further procedural questions.

The impeachment trial continues to focus on Article 2, with the prosecution having rested its case and the defense expected to present its evidence in accordance with the court’s schedule.
