Calvin Abueva’s second act has quickly become one of the defining storylines of the Season 50 Philippine Cup.
At 37, Abueva is not merely extending his PBA career—he is redefining it. Now the centerpiece of rookie franchise Titan Ultra, the veteran forward finished the elimination round as the conference’s leading scorer, a remarkable feat for a player many once viewed as being past his prime.
Tasked as the Giant Risers’ primary offensive engine, Abueva delivered consistently, averaging 23.6 points across 10 games. His resurgence was punctuated by a career-high 41-point explosion in a 100-96 win over the Meralco Bolts, a performance that doubled as a statement game in Titan Ultra’s league debut. Acquired via trade from Magnolia late last season, Abueva embraced both the responsibility and the freedom that came with his new role.
Scoring, however, has been only part of his impact. Abueva also posted a double-double average for the conference, pulling down 11.9 rebounds per game to rank third overall in the league. The volume, though, came with a cost. His aggressive style also placed him atop the turnovers list, averaging 3.9 per outing—a reminder that his all-out approach remains a double-edged sword.
Titan Ultra’s offensive presence did not rest solely on Abueva’s shoulders. Joshua Munzon emerged as another scoring pillar, finishing third in the conference with 21.6 points per game in 11 outings. Between Abueva and Munzon, the expansion team boasted two of the Philippine Cup’s three highest scorers—a rare achievement for a newcomer.
Sandwiched between them on the scoring chart was Blackwater guard RK Ilagan, who averaged 22.0 points despite being limited to just two games by a hamstring injury. Ilagan maximized his brief stint, leading the league in four-point field goals made at 1.5 per game while shooting a staggering 75 percent from beyond the arc. He also topped the assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.0, led the plus-minus category, and paced the league in steals at 2.5 per contest—an all-around statistical surge cut short by injury.
The Top 10 scoring list reflected the league’s growing depth and balance. Converge rookie Juan Gomez de Liaño averaged 19.3 points, followed closely by Blackwater import Sedric Barefield at 19.2 and Meralco sophomore CJ Cansino at 19.1. San Miguel star CJ Perez hovered just behind at 19.09, while Phoenix’s Jason Perkins matched Gomez de Liaño at 19.3. TNT swingman Calvin Oftana rounded out the group at 16.9 points per game.
Beyond scoring, familiar names continued to dominate other statistical categories. San Miguel behemoth June Mar Fajardo reaffirmed his status as the league’s premier rebounder, averaging 14.6 boards, including a conference-best 5.2 offensive rebounds per game. NLEX guard Robert Bolick remained the PBA’s top playmaker at 8.5 assists per outing and set the standard at the free-throw line with a sterling 96.5 percent conversion rate.
Shooting efficiency also produced a few surprises. Meralco’s Jansen Rios emerged as the most accurate three-point shooter at 85.7 percent, while Barefield led the league in threes made with 2.4 per game. Inside the arc, Converge big man Justin Arana topped the charts with 7.1 two-point field goals per contest, while TNT’s Henry Galinato proved the most efficient, shooting 68.4 percent.
Meanwhile, Magnolia’s Zavier Lucero quietly reinforced his reputation as the league’s ironman and defensive anchor. He led all players in minutes played at 36.5 per game and paced the league in blocked shots with 2.1, underscoring why he entered the season as the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.
At the center of it all stands Abueva—older, wiser, and still relentless. In a season defined by new teams and emerging stars, the “Beast” has reminded the PBA that experience, when paired with opportunity, can still roar the loudest.
