Eala beats Valentova in thrilling comeback, reaches Hong Kong Open quarterfinals

Filipina tennis star Alex Eala overcame a determined challenge from Czech opponent Tereza Valentova, 6-4, 7-6(9-7), to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Prudential Hong Kong Open on Thursday, November 5.

The victory was particularly significant for Eala, who entered the match seeking her first win against Valentova after suffering defeats in their previous two meetings.

Valentova previously defeated Eala, 6-1, 6-2, in Osaka in 2025 before securing another victory, 7-6(6), 6-1, at the Qatar Open in February.

Determined to reverse that record, Eala made a strong start, establishing a 3-0 advantage in the opening set.

Valentova responded by breaking Eala’s serve and eventually leveling the score at 4-4, threatening to erase the Filipina’s early momentum.

Eala, however, survived several break points to hold serve for a 5-4 lead before taking advantage of her opponent’s mistakes to capture the first set, 6-4.

The second set proved more challenging as Valentova stepped up her resistance, matching Eala’s intensity in a series of closely contested games.

The Czech player eventually moved ahead, 5-4, and earned an opportunity to serve for the set, but Eala refused to let the match slip away.

The Filipina broke back to level at 5-5 and subsequently moved ahead, 6-5, before Valentova held serve to force a tiebreak.

Eala appeared poised to finish the contest quickly after racing to a 5-0 lead in the tiebreak.

Valentova responded with four consecutive points, narrowing the gap to 5-4 and putting the pressure back on the Filipina.

Eala then reached match point at 6-4, but Valentova saved both opportunities to tie the score at 6-6.

The battle continued as Valentova erased another match point, forcing Eala to dig deeper in the closing exchanges.

Showing composure under pressure, Eala eventually converted her fourth match point to clinch the tiebreak, 9-7, and complete the straight-sets victory.

The 21-year-old Filipina wrapped up the contest in nearly two hours, securing her first career victory over Valentova and a place among the tournament’s final eight.

Eala now moves into the quarterfinals with an opportunity to extend her impressive campaign and compete for a semifinal berth in Hong Kong.
