The husband of Vice President Sara Duterte has gone to court to stop the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) from releasing his tax records to the House of Representatives in connection with the ongoing impeachment proceedings.

In a petition filed on April 10 before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court, lawyer Manases Carpio argued that government agencies cannot compel disclosure of a private individual’s tax documents without his consent.

He maintained that tax returns are confidential and protected by law, citing constitutional guarantees on privacy, liberty, and property.

House justice committee member Bicol Saro Rep. Terry Ridon confirmed the filing, saying the petition named Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III and committee chair Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro as respondents.

The House panel had earlier issued a subpoena covering the tax compliance records and income statements of Vice President Sara Duterte and her spouse covering multiple years in public office.

Ridon said the documents are relevant to the impeachment inquiry, particularly in assessing the accuracy of asset declarations and changes in net worth.

He maintained that Congress has the authority to compel production of evidence in aid of impeachment despite claims of confidentiality.

The House justice committee is set to proceed with its hearings as it moves toward determining probable cause in the complaints against the vice president.
