The Visayas grid was placed under yellow alert from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday as several power plants remained unavailable and others operated at reduced capacity, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines said.
NGCP said available capacity stood at about 2,504 megawatts against an expected peak demand of 2,419 MW, leaving the grid without enough contingency reserves.
Among the generating units on forced outage were Unit 1 of Therma Visayas Inc., Unit 3 of Panay Energy Development Corp., and Unit 2 of Kepco SPC Power Corp.
Unit 3 of Cebu Energy Development Corp., with a capacity of 36 MW, was also operating at reduced output, while power imports from Mindanao remained below normal.
NGCP said 13 power plants had gone on forced outage in September, while 19 others had been unavailable for periods of up to five years.
Another 16 plants were operating at reduced capacity, resulting in an estimated total capacity loss of about 928.4 MW.
A yellow alert means the grid’s operating margin is insufficient to meet the required contingency reserve, although it does not necessarily mean power interruptions will occur.
