Team USA wasted no time making its presence felt at the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship, overpowering Colombia in straight sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-14, to open its campaign in style at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday
The opening two sets saw flashes of resistance from Colombia, who tried to slow down the American attack with scrappy defense and well-placed serves. But once the United States found its rhythm, the gap in firepower became undeniable.
By the third set, the Americans had shifted into overdrive. Wing spiker Ethan Champlin exploded for 8 of his match-high 17 points in the final frame, torching the Colombian block and serving as the catalyst for a blistering 6-1 start. When Champlin drilled an ace to make it 19-9, the floodgates had opened. Colombia briefly clawed to 11 points after a Jiménez Zamora ace, but Champlin immediately struck back to reestablish control at 20-11. The Americans never looked back
Champlin anchored the charge with 12 kills, two blocks, and three service aces, while outside hitter Gabriel García chipped in 12 points to give the U.S. a formidable one-two punch. The American frontline smothered Colombia’s attempts to mount any late rally, forcing errors and cutting off angles.
Colombia’s Miguel Ángel Martínez managed 11 points in a valiant effort, but his squad struggled to break through the U.S. block and sustain any momentum in transition plays.
The sweep sends a clear message from the Americans, who are seeking to reclaim volleyball supremacy on the world stage. Their blend of disciplined defense and explosive wing scoring was on full display — a warning shot to future opponents.
