The bright lights of the Mall of Asia Arena set the stage for an emotional debut for Alas Pilipinas Men in the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship—but despite a spirited third-set push, the home team fell to Tunisia in straight sets, 13-25, 17-25, 23-25, on Friday night.
The Filipinos looked rattled in the opening set as the 40th-ranked Tunisians dictated the tempo with clinical precision. Tunisia’s power-packed attacks and airtight defense exposed early gaps in the Filipino block, cruising to a 25-13 win.
The second frame saw flashes of resistance from the hosts, but service errors and untimely lapses allowed Tunisia to pull away midway and secure a 25-17 cushion, placing the Philippines on the brink of defeat.
Then came the third set—where Bryan Bagunas transformed the mood of the arena. Down 3-4, the team captain unleashed a personal 3-0 run, hammering a cross-court attack and firing back-to-back aces to push the hosts ahead 6-4, igniting the crowd.
Bagunas would go on to score 11 of his 23 points in the set, repeatedly dragging Alas Pilipinas back within striking distance. From a 17-20 hole, he strung together powerful hits to tie the frame at 21 and again at 22. But Tunisia’s composure held firm, capitalizing on late Filipino service miscues to escape, 25-23, and seal the sweep.
Despite the loss, the Filipinos earned applause for their refusal to fold, especially in the face of a heavily favored opponent. Bagunas led all scorers with 20 attacks, a block, and two aces, while veteran Marck Espejo chipped in nine points. Oussama Ben Romdhane anchored Tunisia with 17 points built on 15 kills and two blocks.
Alas Pilipinas now look to regroup quickly as they face another continental powerhouse in Egypt on Tuesday—seeking not just their first win, but their first full breakthrough moment on volleyball’s grandest stage.
