HAMILTON, Canada – The US Secret Service arrested a Venezuelan national near the White House after he allegedly threatened to kill President Donald Trump, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Friday.
According to the DHS, Secret Service officers approached the suspect Thursday evening after observing suspicious behavior inside a parked vehicle in Washington, DC.
Authorities said the man allegedly told officers that he had heard voices instructing him to travel to the US capital and kill Trump.
A subsequent search of the vehicle, which authorities said had been reported stolen, uncovered three firearms, including an AR-15-style rifle and two handguns, along with dozens of rounds of ammunition.
The DHS identified the suspect as Ronny Yordrix Guanipa Chrinos, a Venezuelan national whom the department described as being in the United States illegally.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about possible criminal charges or whether the suspect had made any attempt to approach the president.
