WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump said Friday that Washington was engaged in talks with Iran, claiming that the United States remained in a strong position following its confrontation with Tehran.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said the US had gained the upper hand in its dealings with Iran and that discussions between the two countries were progressing.

“We beat Iran. We are doing very well with Iran, we’re talking to Iran,” Trump said.

The president also claimed that no American military personnel had been killed during the previous six or seven months.

Trump pointed to developments in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments, as another indication of improving conditions.

“We have the Hormuz Strait opening, doing more business than they’ve ever done with oil … and we are talking to Iran,” he said.

Trump did not provide further details about the nature of the discussions, the officials involved, or whether the talks had produced any agreements.

His remarks came amid continuing international attention to relations between Washington and Tehran, particularly over regional security and energy trade.
