The University of the Philippines (UP) and De La Salle University (DLSU) signed a groundbreaking memorandum of understanding on Friday to elevate research and academic programs, marking the start of a powerful five-year collaboration.
The agreement will focus on advancing social entrepreneurship, service-learning innovations, and joint research initiatives, alongside resource mobilization and academic material sharing. Both institutions are committed to integrating these efforts with sustainability and community well-being at their core.
“This strategic partnership is a significant step toward fostering a culture of sustainability in the Philippines, with a lasting impact on our institutions and the wider academic and national communities,” UP President Angelo Jimenez emphasized in a statement.
Social entrepreneurship, as defined by UP, goes beyond traditional business models by integrating economic, social, and environmental development, with a direct focus on community well-being. Meanwhile, service learning combines academic learning with community service, allowing students to address real-world issues while enhancing their personal and professional growth.
“Service learning allows students to connect their academic knowledge with social relevance, engage with communities, and develop essential life skills,” said UP Vice President for Academic Affairs Leo Cubillan. This partnership promises to provide students with opportunities for growth while making a meaningful contribution to society.
