Two alleged members of a communist armed group surrendered to authorities in Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental, and turned over improvised firearms and ammunition, the Philippine National Police said.
The surrenderers, identified only by the aliases “Dumalag,” 33, and “Rhiane,” 24, were described by police as former members of Platoon Lennon under Guerrilla Front 4B of the North Central Mindanao Regional Committee.
Authorities said the two surrendered on Aug. 28 following coordination among several police, intelligence and local security units.
They turned over two improvised shotguns and nine rounds of 12-gauge ammunition.
The pair were placed under the custody of the 1001st Maneuver Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 10 for debriefing and profiling, while the firearms and ammunition will undergo forensic examination.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the surrender represented a move away from armed conflict and encouraged other members of armed groups to return to civilian life.
“Ang mahalaga ngayon ay mabigyan sila ng pagkakataong makapagsimulang muli at mamuhay nang mapayapa,” Nartatez said.
The PNP said operations and community-based efforts would continue in areas affected by insurgency.
