A trainee pilot and an instructor died after their aircraft crashed during a training flight in Kanpur in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state on Thursday.
The four-seat, twin-engine plane had taken off from a flight training center before the accident, according to senior local police official Raghubir Lal.
India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation said the aircraft was flying within the designated local training area of Kanpur Civil Airport when it crashed Thursday afternoon.
Both people aboard the plane suffered fatal injuries. Authorities identified them only as a trainee pilot and a flight instructor.
Officials did not immediately provide further details about what happened shortly before the aircraft went down.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has been notified and will lead an inquiry into the crash under India’s aviation rules.
Investigators will examine the circumstances surrounding the flight as part of efforts to establish what caused the aircraft to crash.
The Civil Aviation Ministry said the cause would be determined through the investigation and did not speculate on what may have led to the accident.
