Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino is warning of a tough challenge for Team Philippines at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand from December 9 to 20. Host-imposed restrictions, including the removal of certain weight categories and limits on events, could affect the country’s medal chances.
“Ma-match okay na ‘yun,” Tolentino said, reaffirming the team’s goal. Pero we’ll try our best. Marami surprises din.”
Carlos Yulo, two-time Olympic gold medalist, will skip the Games due to the new gymnastics rules, which allow competitors only one apparatus in the individual finals, limiting their chances to win multiple golds.
At the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, the Philippines secured 58 golds, 85 silvers, and 117 bronze medals. This year, over 1,600 Filipino athletes will compete, with boxing expected to be a strong medal contributor.
Tolentino also cited men’s 5×5 basketball, where the Philippines is defending champion. Flagbearers for the opening ceremony are yet to be announced, as Thailand is observing a national mourning period for former Queen Sirikit.
