The rivalry that defined PBA Season 49 is back — and it’s sparking early fireworks in Season 50. TNT Tropang 5G and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, two powerhouse squads that battled in two finals last season, are set to collide again Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in what promises to be another chapter of their fierce saga.
Tropang 5G ready to roll again
Fresh off a dominant 93-78 win over Phoenix, TNT looks sharp and hungry to build momentum behind head coach Chot Reyes. The Tropang 5G may have fallen short of their Grand Slam dream last season, but Reyes says the mission is simple this time — outwork and outlast everyone.
“Our goal is to be the hardest-working and best-conditioned team,” Reyes said. “We’ll approach every game with focus and intensity, and if the wins come, we’ll take them.”
Rey Nambatac made a thunderous return in their opening game, exploding for 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting, while new additions Kevin Ferrer, Jio Jalalon, and Tyrus Hill add depth and hustle to TNT’s already loaded roster. The only piece missing? The veteran leadership of Jayson Castro, who is still recovering but expected to rejoin the lineup soon.
Ginebra aims to bounce back
The Gin Kings, meanwhile, are out to prove that their slow start is just a minor bump. Their 80-73 loss to Magnolia in the Manila Clasico opener exposed some early chemistry issues — something coach Tim Cone hopes to address before facing one of the league’s most cohesive units.
“I didn’t see anybody really play well,” Cone admitted after the loss. “Our first group has to pick it up. We can’t afford to start games flat, especially against a team like TNT.”
Cone, who brushed off the narrative of losing to his former player LA Tenorio now coaching Magnolia, knows that the bigger picture lies ahead. “It’s just one game,” he said. “What matters is how we respond.”
Rivalry renewed
Every TNT-Ginebra game carries the weight of history — high tempo, emotional swings, and a packed house roaring at every bucket. From Mikey Williams’ long bombs to Scottie Thompson’s grit, expect nothing less than a statement game from both sides.
Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m., and for PBA fans, it’s not just another Wednesday night — it’s war at the Big Dome.
