Blackwater is riding high after a dominant season opener, but it faces a gritty test Wednesday night as Meralco seeks redemption in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Bossing shocked everyone with a 107-87 demolition of Terrafirma to start their campaign strong—without their top scorer Sedrick Barefield, who sat out with a shoulder injury. Now cleared to play, Barefield joins the fiery mix of Christian David, RK Ilagan, Dalph Panopio, and Abu Tratter as Blackwater eyes its first 2-0 start since 2024.
Rookie sensation Panopio, the No. 3 overall pick, immediately impressed with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals in his debut. But he knows one win means nothing if the team can’t sustain the grind. “We can’t be satisfied with this win. We have to stay hungry, keep working, and fix the things we didn’t do right,” he said.
Head coach Jeff Cariaso echoed the sentiment, pushing his squad to stay grounded despite the hot start. “The goal is consistency. One win doesn’t define us—but it shows we’re on the right track,” Cariaso noted.
Meanwhile, Meralco is in desperate need of a spark after two gut-wrenching defeats that spoiled their title-reclamation drive. The Bolts blew an 11-point lead against Rain or Shine, managing only nine points in the final quarter before losing in overtime, 96-95. That came just days after failing to contain Calvin Abueva in a 100-96 loss to Titan Ultra.
Coach Luigi Trillo’s crew, still anchored by veterans Chris Newsome, Allein Maliksi, and Cliff Hodge, will need to dig deep to avoid falling into a 0-3 hole. The Bolts know the urgency—and the fans can expect them to come out swinging.
Can Blackwater’s youthful energy outlast Meralco’s experience? Or will the Bolts finally plug the leaks and remind everyone why they’re still a championship-caliber squad?
Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM—another early-season showdown you won’t want to miss.
