Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has called on China to stop its alleged aggressive activities in the West Philippine Sea and demonstrate sincerity before the Philippines considers restoring direct military-to-military communications with Beijing.

Teodoro maintained that China must respect the Philippines’ sovereign rights and put an end to what he described as “predatory activities” in disputed waters before formal military dialogue can resume.

According to the defense chief, official military communications between the two countries have long been limited due to alleged abuses of existing mechanisms and the lack of a properly structured communication framework.

He emphasized that rebuilding military engagement requires genuine commitment and concrete actions from Beijing, particularly in addressing activities that threaten Philippine maritime interests.

Teodoro also clarified that the Philippine government’s objective is not to provoke war but to defend the country’s sovereignty, sovereign rights, and national dignity.

His remarks come amid continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where the Philippines has repeatedly raised concerns over the conduct of Chinese vessels, including dangerous maneuvers and interference with Philippine maritime operations.

The Department of National Defense (DND) has maintained its position that meaningful military dialogue must be accompanied by respect for international law and Philippine maritime rights.

Teodoro reiterated that the government remains committed to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and national security while pursuing peaceful approaches to maritime disputes.
