Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. emphasized the need to strengthen the Philippines’ external defense capabilities, expand military presence, and improve national security infrastructure as he presented the Department of National Defense’s (DND) proposed 2027 budget before the Senate Committee on Finance.

During the budget hearing before Subcommittee A, Teodoro outlined the department’s priorities, including sustaining gains in internal defense operations while enhancing the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) ability to respond to external security threats.

The defense chief stressed the importance of expanding AFP deployments across the archipelago, developing strategic military bases, upgrading critical infrastructure, and strengthening cybersecurity and military capabilities.

Teodoro also highlighted the DND’s continuing commitment to disaster preparedness and response, ensuring that military resources remain available to assist communities during emergencies and natural calamities.

The department likewise aims to improve veterans’ welfare and pursue the modernization of the Veterans Memorial Medical Center to provide better healthcare services to military veterans and their dependents.

Meanwhile, Teodoro underscored the importance of strengthening defense partnerships with like-minded countries to enhance military cooperation, strategic readiness, and national resilience.

The DND’s proposed 2027 budget of Php 324.632 billion is intended to support the country’s defense priorities, including military modernization, infrastructure development, and improved operational capabilities.
