Southwest Monsoon to bring rains as severe tropical storm Podul approaches

The southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” will continue to bring rains over parts of Luzon on Sunday, while Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Podul is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) tonight or early Monday, according to the state weather bureau.

As of 3 a.m., STS Podul was located 1,875 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 135 kph, moving west at 15 kph. Based on the projected track by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), STS Podul is unlikely to directly affect the country.

The Ilocos Region, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands are expected to experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the habagat, with a risk of flash floods or landslides from moderate to at times heavy rains.

Metro Manila, along with Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan, will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

The rest of the country is forecasted to have fair weather, with localized thunderstorms possible in the afternoon or evening. PAGASA has warned of potential flash floods or landslides, particularly in low-lying areas, during heavy rainfall.

Additionally, PAGASA reported that the low pressure area, which was formerly Tropical Depression Fabian, has dissipated as of 2 a.m.
