SMDC powers up Iloilo with solar first, expands sustainable living to the Visayas

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — SM Development Corporation (SMDC) marked Earth Day 2026 with a forward-looking milestone, switching on its first renewable energy system in the Visayas at Style Residences in Iloilo City.

The energization signals more than a symbolic shift. It represents SMDC’s growing push to embed sustainability into the everyday rhythm of residential living—extending that vision beyond Metro Manila and into regional communities.

Taking sustainability beyond the capital
The Iloilo rollout is part of SMDC’s broader renewable energy program, anchored on its partnership with Buskowitz Energy signed in October 2025. The initiative covers four pilot developments: Style Residences in Iloilo, along with Spring Residences, South Residences, and Vine Residences in Metro Manila.

By launching its first solar-powered system in the Visayas, SMDC is making a clear statement—sustainable living should not be limited to major urban centers, but accessible to communities across the country.

From blueprint to daily benefit
With the system now operational, solar power will help run essential shared spaces within the property, including lighting and key common facilities.

The shift is expected to cut energy consumption by around 15 percent—improving operational efficiency while easing electricity-related costs over time, a component that directly impacts association dues.

But beyond cost savings, the move reflects a deeper transformation in how residential spaces are designed and powered.

“Sustainability becomes more meaningful when people actually experience it in their daily lives,” said Jessica Bianca Sy. “Bringing this to Iloilo is about making that experience more inclusive, so more communities can benefit from how we design and operate our developments.”

For Buskowitz Energy CEO James Carlos P. Buskowitz, the project demonstrates how renewable solutions can move from concept to scale.

“This energization shows that solar can be seamlessly integrated into residential developments—not just in major cities, but across regions—while supporting everyday operations efficiently,” he said.

Scaling a cleaner future
Following the Iloilo activation, SMDC is set to roll out similar systems across its remaining pilot sites, with more projects in the pipeline.

The company also announced that renewable energy integration will become a standard feature in all future SMDC Nature developments—embedding sustainability at the core of its next-generation communities.

This move aligns with the broader environmental agenda of SM Prime Holdings, as it continues to reduce its carbon footprint while enhancing the quality of everyday living.

Where sustainability becomes standard
As cities grow and lifestyles evolve, the conversation is shifting—from sustainability as an add-on to sustainability as a built-in feature of modern living.

At Style Residences, that shift is already underway.

From powering shared spaces to improving operational efficiency, renewable energy is no longer a distant concept—it’s becoming part of how residents live, day in and day out.

For SMDC, the Iloilo energization is just the beginning.
