Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito on Monday expressed full support for the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) new safety regulations for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers, saying the measures are crucial in addressing the rising number of road accidents involving public transport.
“Bilang isang motorista at siklista, buong suporta ko ang mga bagong patakarang inanunsyo ni DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon para mapabuti ang kaligtasan sa ating mga kalsada,” Ejercito said in a statement.
Ejercito, who authored the Road Speed Limiter Act of 2016 (Republic Act 10916), emphasized the continuing relevance of the law and the need for proactive efforts to prevent speed-related tragedies.
“The safety of our people must always come first, and we must take proactive and preventive action to avoid speed-related tragedies,” he said.
He stressed the importance of enforcing stricter regulations and raising standards for PUV drivers, especially given their responsibility for passenger safety.
“Kailangang siguruhin na sila ay nasa maayos na kondisyon —physically, mentally, and emotionally—tuwing sila’y bumabiyahe,” he added.
Ejercito, an avid motorist and cyclist, shared how fatigue, lack of training, and substance abuse can lead to fatal incidents. He pledged support for the DOTr and urged other lawmakers and agencies to help improve drivers’ working conditions, training access, and public awareness on road safety.
