Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has called on local government units (LGUs) to intensify their efforts in addressing child malnutrition by enhancing nutrition-related services in schools and communities.
In a statement on Wednesday, Gatchalian emphasized the importance of effectively implementing Republic Act 12199, or the Early Childhood Care and Development System Act, to mobilize LGUs in delivering programs and services that promote children’s health, nutrition, and early education.
“In celebration of Nutrition Month, I urge local government units to ramp up feeding programs in schools and communities, improve access to nutrition services, and invest in long-term strategies such as livelihood support for families,” he stated.
He highlighted the critical link between proper nutrition and educational outcomes, noting that children who suffer from malnutrition often experience learning difficulties and developmental delays. “The fight for education is also a fight against malnutrition,” he added.
Gatchalian stressed that sustained action from LGUs is vital to ensure the physical and cognitive development of children, particularly those in disadvantaged communities.
