The Sandiganbayan Third Division has allowed former senator Bong Revilla to skip court hearings until July, unless the tribunal requires his appearance.

Court clerk Dennis Pulma confirmed the approval of Revilla’s waiver of appearance, which covers the period of prosecution presentation of evidence.

Revilla’s lawyer, Ready Anthony Balisi, said the waiver applies while the state builds its case and presents witnesses before the anti-graft court.

He added the move was within the rights of the accused, without giving further details on the decision.

The malversation trial against Revilla started on May 5 in connection with an alleged P92.8-million flood control project in Pandi, Bulacan.

Prosecutors have described the project as a “ghost” undertaking, forming part of the basis for the charges.

Aside from malversation, Revilla also faces graft allegations tied to the same project, keeping him under detention despite posting bail for a separate charge.

The Sandiganbayan said his absence remains conditional, meaning he may still be ordered to attend future proceedings if required.
