Russia launched a sweeping overnight attack across Ukraine, sending drones and multiple types of missiles toward the capital and several other regions in a barrage that killed at least two people in Kyiv, Ukrainian authorities said Tuesday.
The capital came under repeated attack through the night, forcing residents into shelters as air defenses responded to incoming drones and missiles. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 10 people were injured, five of whom required hospitalization. Two were reported in critical condition.
Emergency crews were deployed to several parts of Kyiv after explosions sparked fires and damaged buildings. In Solomianskyi district, rescuers helped 10 people trapped inside a five-story residential building, while three others were rescued in separate incidents elsewhere in the city.
Damage was also reported in Holosiivskyi, where a blast affected the upper floor of a 26-story non-residential building. Fires broke out at warehouses and on the grounds of a private school, while garages, vehicles and other non-residential properties were hit in other districts.
The surrounding Kyiv region was also targeted. Ukrainian emergency officials reported drone attacks in Boryspil and Fastiv, with industrial facilities among the sites affected. Seven trucks were destroyed in one fire, while firefighters responded to a logistics complex that authorities said was struck twice.
The assault stretched across much of Ukraine, with attacks reported in regions including Odesa, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Poltava, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Russian aircraft were also reported to have deployed guided bombs against areas closer to the front lines.
The bombardment came after the end of a three-day temporary ceasefire observed during a recent visit to the region by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, bringing major attacks back into focus amid continuing diplomatic efforts surrounding the war.
Ukrainian authorities had not initially reported deaths from the strikes outside the capital. Because of the continuing conflict, claims about individual attacks, targets and the full extent of damage could not be independently verified. (Anadolu)
