Former President Rodrigo Duterte clinched victory in Davao City’s mayoral race, securing 662,630 votes and defeating Karlo Nograles and three other candidates. Nograles, who came second with 80,852 votes, had said he ran to offer Davao City “a choice, a chance or an opportunity to change the way we provide services.”
Duterte, 80, is currently detained at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, awaiting trial in September for crimes against humanity related to his war on drugs.
Despite his win, questions remain on how Duterte will fulfill his duties as mayor while in detention. The former president previously stated that he welcomed challengers in the race.
