Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow and Pyongyang were coordinating efforts to maintain regional security and stability as ties between the two countries continued to deepen.

In a message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the 81st anniversary of Korea’s Liberation Day, Putin said relations between Russia and North Korea had reached an unprecedented level of strategic partnership.

He said cooperation had expanded across several areas, including coordination on regional security concerns.

Putin also expressed confidence that Moscow and Pyongyang would continue working together on bilateral and international issues.

Russia and North Korea had significantly strengthened political, military and economic ties over the past two years following the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in June 2024.

The agreement marked a major expansion of cooperation between the two countries amid broader geopolitical tensions in the region.

Putin said continued coordination would serve the interests of both countries and support what Moscow described as a more balanced international order.

Korea’s Liberation Day marks the end of Japan’s colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula in 1945 and is observed in both North and South Korea.
