A road safety campaign of the Police Regional Office 6 has reached 1,312 minors across Western Visayas since its launch in July, police said Monday.
PRO-6 regional director Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said the initiative, called Oplan Sagip Bata, was created after authorities noted a high number of road incidents involving minors.
Since its rollout, police units in the region have conducted 1,096 weekend operations. Tuaño said about 70 percent of those found violating regulations were only given warnings.
The campaign focuses on preventing accidents, enforcing local ordinances and intervening early in situations that could put minors at risk.
Police said motorcycles are commonly used by students because they are relatively affordable, but minors are not allowed to drive them.
Operations are conducted along major roads, with police units coordinating with barangay officials and using city and municipal ordinances as the legal basis for enforcement.
Among the violations recorded were reckless imprudence resulting in injury and breaches of curfew rules for minors.
Tuaño said other police regional offices have started coordinating with PRO-6 to study the initiative as a possible model for similar road safety efforts.
