PPA rolls out integrated management system to enhance port operations

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has introduced a new Integrated Management System (IMS) to improve port operations nationwide and ensure compliance with international standards, PPA General Manager Jay Santiago announced on Wednesday.

In a statement, Santiago emphasized that the IMS aligns port operations with ISO standards and the Government Quality Management Systems Standards, reinforcing efficiency and sustainability.

“By implementing globally recognized standards, we are ensuring that our ports operate efficiently while upholding the highest levels of corporate governance and sustainability,” Santiago stated.

Focus on safety, sustainability and efficiency

The IMS incorporates measures to reduce the environmental impact of port activities while enhancing occupational health and safety protocols.

Santiago highlighted that these initiatives are designed to safeguard PPA employees, port users, and stakeholders by fostering a safe and healthy work environment.

“We are proud to announce that we are at par with the world’s best port practices, ensuring that Philippine ports are globally competitive and ready,” he added.

Nationwide implementation by 2028

The IMS was officially launched at the Port Management Offices (PMO) NCR-North and NCR-South on Monday.

Santiago has instructed all PMOs nationwide to enforce the IMS manual, particularly in key operational areas such as vessel entrance and departure clearance and the entry and withdrawal of cargo.

The PPA aims to fully implement the IMS across all PMOs and its head office by 2028, as part of a broader effort to standardize and enhance port management nationwide.

“This initiative will not only position Philippine ports as globally competitive trade hubs but will also reduce the environmental footprint of port activities, ensuring a more sustainable and economically vibrant future,” Santiago concluded.
