Power outages hit Bicol, Eastern Visayas as Uwan nears

Parts of Bicol and Eastern Visayas experienced power outages on Sunday as Super Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong) approached Luzon.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said in a video statement that Uwan’s strong winds and rains are already being felt in the two regions.

“Ang bagyong Uwan po ay kasalukuyan nakakaapekto na sa Region 8 (Eastern Visayas), Bicol Region. Malapit na po siya dun or nandoon na po ang kanyang ulan at lakas ng hangin,” he said.

According to initial reports from regional offices, Tacloban City and the towns of Palo, Bato, and Babatngon in Leyte lost power as of 4 a.m. Sunday. Some areas in Northern Samar and Catanduanes also reported outages.

“Nagkakaroon na rin po ng power outages sa iba’t ibang lugar sa Bicol Region,” Alejandro added.

As of Sunday morning, no incidents of flooding or landslides had been reported. However, around 50,000 residents in Albay were preemptively evacuated by 3 a.m.

Alejandro reminded all local government units in the typhoon’s path—particularly in Southern, Central, and Northern Luzon—to continue implementing preemptive safety measures.
