PNP warns vs rising school threats

The Philippine National Police on Friday warned the public against spreading unverified reports as authorities monitored an apparent increase in threats involving schools.

PNP public information chief Col. Allen Co said police recognized public concern over recent incidents affecting students and campuses.

Co said the PNP was working with school officials, local governments and other stakeholders to help ensure the safety of learners.

He said some reported threats appeared to have been made by students who wanted to avoid attending classes or taking examinations.

The warning came after false online claims of a shooting at Bagong Silangan High School in Quezon City circulated on Thursday.

School officials later clarified that students heard a loud noise from a nearby construction site and mistook it for gunfire.

The school said the claims spread through alarming messages on Facebook Messenger, prompting authorities to remind the public to verify information before sharing it.

Co urged the public to remain calm but alert and to immediately report suspicious information to authorities, noting that unverified posts could heighten fear, especially after the June shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City that left three students dead and 20 others injured.
